How Apple Watch "sees" your sleep

So don't spiral over a single number like "only 40 minutes of deep sleep last night." Single-night stage estimates carry real error; what's genuinely valuable is the trend.
How to actually read your sleep data
One practical rule: look at weeks and months, not single nights.
- Any one night's stage durations can swing with tossing and turning, band fit, and algorithm error — their standalone value is limited.
- Trends, on the other hand, are reliable and worth acting on: "my average sleep time has been shrinking over the past two weeks," "I've been falling asleep later and later," "my resting heart rate is higher than usual."
The relationship between sleep duration and health is roughly U-shaped: for most adults, around 7 hours is ideal, and chronically sleeping much less or much more is both linked to higher health risks. The watch helps you see where you land over the long run — far more meaningful than agonizing over one night.
Three things that make the data trustworthy
- Snug but not tight: too loose and the heart rate signal drops out; too tight and blood flow is restricted. Either hurts accuracy.
