Sleep Cycle

Why sleep in cycles?

A night of sleep consists of several ~90-minute cycles, each passing through light sleep, deep sleep and REM. Waking during the light stage between cycles feels far easier than being pulled out of deep sleep by an alarm.

How many cycles are enough?

Adults generally need 4–6 full cycles a night (6–9 hours). Five cycles (7.5 hours) is the comfort zone for most people. Consistency beats duration: fix your wake time first, then work on going to bed earlier.

FAQ

90 minutes is the population average; individuals range between 80–110 minutes. Treat the result as a starting point — if you still wake groggy, shift by 15 minutes and retry. Paired with Apple Watch, the MindSleep Health app can observe your actual cycle length.
Getting into bed is not falling asleep. Healthy adults take about 10–20 minutes to fall asleep on average, so the buffer keeps the cycles truly aligned with your wake time.

Curious about your real sleep cycles?

With Apple Watch, the MindSleep Health app records deep, light and REM structure every night, and its smart alarm wakes you gently during light sleep.
