About BMI

What is BMI?

BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height²(m²) — a common reference for assessing whether body weight is healthy, widely used in population health screening.

Its limitations

BMI cannot tell muscle from fat: a muscular athlete may read “overweight” while a high-body-fat slim person reads “normal”. Adult standards also do not apply to pregnant women, the elderly or adolescents — combine with body fat rate and waist circumference.

Long-term deviation from the normal range is also associated with problems like sleep apnea — exactly why a sleep company keeps this tool in its box.

At the same BMI, Asian populations tend to carry higher body fat and metabolic risk, so the Chinese standard sets the overweight line at 24 (WHO: 25). For our primary audience it is the more relevant reference.
Short-term weight fluctuation is normal. Weigh yourself at a fixed time weekly (e.g. fasting in the morning) and review the BMI trend monthly — more meaningful than watching the number daily.
